About this test

Tests for the level of these hormones in your blood:

  • Total Testosterone
  • Free Testosterone

Sample collection method:

  • Finger prick blood collection
What does this test measure?

Testosterone is a primary sex hormone for people assigned male at birth. It is mainly produced by your testes and plays a different role in each life stage. For adults assigned male at birth, testosterone impacts sperm production, muscle size and strength, bone growth, and sex drive (libido) amongst other important functions in the body.

This test measures the following:

Total Testosterone measures all testosterone in the bloodstream – this includes both testosterone attached to proteins, like sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) and albumin & free testosterone which is not attached to proteins.

Free testosterone is testosterone in the bloodstream that is not attached to proteins.

When should I consider taking this test?

This test is only provided for individuals who were assigned male at birth. Samples from individuals who were assigned other sexes at birth cannot be processed by the lab.

This test may be appropriate for you if you have had:

  • An abnormal testosterone test in the past
  • Medications that impact testosterone levels
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Changes to sex drive
  • Changes to hair growth
  • Changes to mood

How do I prepare for the test?

For your sample, it is recommended to test in the morning when testosterone levels are typically the highest. Although fasting is not required for this test, many healthcare providers recommend not eating or drinking (except water) between midnight and when you test.

After activating your kit, follow the instructions online in the secure portal. Printed instructions are also provided in the test kit.
